Om Prakash, the former Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka, was found murdered at his Bengaluru home on Sunday. He held the DGP position from 2015 to 2017. His wife, Pallavi, is the main suspect and is being questioned by the authorities. Om Prakash was reportedly stabbed to death, and the weapon used in the crime has been found at the scene. His body was discovered in his residence in HSR Layout, where police are conducting a detailed investigation to understand the events leading to his death.
Police reports indicate multiple stab wounds on his chest, stomach, and hand. Other family members, including his daughter, are also being questioned as she was present at the house. Vikash Kumar Vikash, the additional commissioner of police (West), stated that the motive behind the murder is still unclear. Still, the investigation is ongoing, with the wife and daughter being interrogated.
“There was a call on the 112 police helpline. When the team came here, they got to know about the murder. He was staying with his wife and daughter. We are taking information from his son as well. We haven’t arrested anyone, we are questioning his wife and daughter, we are still investigating the reason for the murder," Officer Vikash Kumar Vikash stated.
According to police sources, Pallavi allegedly admitted to the crime during a phone call with the wife of another retired IPS officer. The unfortunate incident reportedly followed a period of tension at home.
It is reported that she told his neighbour, "I have killed the monster". Om Prakash and Pallavi are said to have argued on Sunday around 3:30 pm. During the fight, Pallavi allegedly threw chilli powder at him to weaken him, tied him up, and stabbed him several times.
The neighbour then informed her husband, and the police arrived. Pallavi and her daughter were immediately taken into custody. Pallavi and her daughter, Kruthi, have been questioned for over 12 hours since then. A medical report has confirmed that two different knives were used in the stabbing. Initial investigations suggest the argument may have been over a property that Om Prakash had transferred to a family member. The killing appears to have happened as a result of that dispute.
A case was registered after Om Prakash's son, Kartikeya, filed a complaint. According to him, both his mother and sister struggle with depression and had earlier threatened to kill his father. Because of those threats, Om Prakash had shifted to his sister’s house, but just two days ago, his daughter brought him back home despite his reluctance. Kartikeya said he was attending an event in Domlur when neighbours called him urgently. When he got back, he found the police already there, and his father lying in a pool of blood.
In his complaint to the police, he stated, "My mother, Pallavi, and my sister, Kruthi, have been suffering from depression and used to fight with my father frequently. I strongly suspect that they are involved in the murder of my father."
So far, no one has been arrested.
Om Prakash, 68, was originally from Champaran district in Bihar and had a notable career in the Karnataka police. He started his journey in the state as an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in Harapanahalli. Throughout his service, he held the position of superintendent of police (SP) in several districts, such as Shimoga, Uttara Kannada and Chikkamagaluru. He also served in key roles like state vigilance SP and worked with the Karnataka Lokayukta. A 1981-batch IPS officer, he went on to become the deputy inspector general (DIG) of the fire service and later the inspector general of police (IGP) in the criminal investigation department (CID). He was appointed Director General of Police (DGP) in March 2015.
