A day after former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren joined the BJP. On Saturday, ex-JMM legislator Lobin Hembrom officially switched allegiance to the BJP, receiving his membership from the party’s state chief, Babulal Marandi, in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
“The JMM has changed from what was it in Guruji’s (JMM supremo Shibu Soren) time. Now, there is no respect for senior leaders in the JMM. So, I decided to join the BJP for development of Jharkhand and uplift of tribals,” the former Borio legislator stated at the party’s state headquarters.
Hembrom’s political journey took a sharp turn after he was disqualified from the Jharkhand Assembly under the anti-defection law, effective from July 26. Known for his outspoken criticism of his former party, Hembrom contested as an independent candidate from the Rajmahal Lok Sabha seat, directly challenging the JMM’s nominee, Vijay Hansdak. However, he faced defeat in the parliamentary elections.
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) had taken action against Hembrom by initiating proceedings under the anti-defection law in the Speaker’s Tribunal.
Champai Soren joined the BJP on Friday, just two days after resigning from the JMM. He cited dissatisfaction with the party’s current functioning and “bitter humiliation” as reasons for his departure.
Lobin Hembrom is regarded as a prominent tribal leader in the Santhal Pargana region of the state. Notably, he had been outspoken against the JMM while still a member, raising concerns about illegal mining and transportation in the district. His allegations prompted an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
