Flying Wedge unveils Supreme Lite, touted as India’s first AI fighter jet

Indian defence startup Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace (FWDA) has unveiled FWD Supreme Lite, a flight technology demonstrator for its AI-piloted fighter aircraft programme. The launch marks a shift from digital design and concept development to testing a physical aircraft. FWDA has released a video preview of the approximately 250-kg-class demonstrator. The aircraft is now moving through airframe development, system integration and ground testing. The company plans to conduct its first flight in the third quarter of 2026.
Supreme Lite will act as the first flying testbed for FWDA’s wider FWD Supreme aircraft family. The company plans to use the demonstrator to test and validate the aircraft’s aerodynamic configuration, flight architecture and key technologies. These technologies will later be developed further and incorporated into larger variants of the Supreme family.
The programme comes weeks after FWDA announced its Mobbing Doctrine, which proposes a different approach to the economics of air combat. The doctrine questions the traditional model of depending on a smaller number of increasingly expensive fighter aircraft. Instead, it focuses on deploying larger numbers of AI-piloted fighter aircraft. FWDA believes this could create numerical, tactical and economic asymmetry in combat.
The company aims to combine fighter-like performance with AI-enabled autonomy and combat mass. Its approach seeks to change the cost equation for generating air power while increasing costs for an adversary. The Supreme family is the platform through which FWDA plans to develop and demonstrate this concept.
FWDA founder and CEO Suhas Tejaskanda said Supreme Lite will allow the company to begin testing its ideas through a real aircraft rather than keeping the programme limited to a digital environment. “The battlefield is moving towards greater autonomy, distributed operations and combat mass; the future will be defined by who will own the algorithms. The Mobbing Doctrine is built around the idea that AI can change that equation by enabling a larger number of capable fighter-class aircraft to operate as a coordinated force. Supreme Lite is our first opportunity to take that thinking out of the digital environment and begin validating it through a real flying aircraft.”
Tejaskanda also said India should take an active role in developing the next generation of AI-piloted fighter aircraft instead of only observing developments in other countries. “Our vision is clear that as a new generation of AI-piloted fighter aircraft begins to emerge in the skies around the world, India should not merely watch that future being developed elsewhere. We should be a part of building it”, he added.
FWDA’s programme comes as several countries and defence companies work on autonomous combat aircraft. In the United States, Shield AI’s X-BAT is moving towards its first VTOL flight. Anduril’s YFQ-44A Fury is also advancing under the US Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft programme. Germany’s Helsing is developing the CA 1 Europa as an advanced multi-role autonomous uncrewed combat aerial vehicle, or UCAV.
FWDA positions FWD Supreme as an Indian entrant into this growing field of AI-piloted and autonomous combat aircraft. The company says the aircraft is designed and manufactured in India. It also claims that its architecture is based on the Mobbing Doctrine rather than simply copying an existing foreign Collaborative Combat Aircraft concept.
The Supreme family is also being developed with Rocket Assisted Take-Off, or RATO, as a capability under consideration. FWDA said this could allow the aircraft to operate from shorter or austere launch locations. It could also reduce dependence on conventional full-length fighter runways. The company plans to develop and validate these capabilities gradually as the programme progresses.
With Supreme Lite now undergoing ground testing, the planned first flight in the third quarter of 2026 is the next major milestone for the programme. The development also follows FWDA’s August 22, 2025 announcement on the readiness of its Kaal Bhairava E2A2 programme. The company described it as India’s first AI-powered Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Autonomous Combat Aircraft.
FWDA said Kaal Bhairava E2A2 has been designed and developed entirely in India. The platform is built for up to 30 hours of endurance and a range of 3,000 km. The company said the aircraft is designed to support AI-driven autonomy for precision strikes, swarm operations and real-time Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. With Supreme Lite, FWDA now plans to take its AI-enabled combat aircraft development from concept and digital engineering to a flying test platform.
