A man threw several firebombs into the headquarters of Japan’s ruling party in Tokyo on Saturday, according to public broadcaster NHK and other Japanese media. Although, no injuries were reported.
The news sources claimed that the man, who was immediately detained, had crashed his vehicle into some nearby fencing. His attack's motivation was not immediately apparent. Police in Tokyo said the case was still being investigated and declined to comment further.
As a result of a growing money scandal involving questionable fundraising and probable tax fraud, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party is losing support from the general public. The party said any questions should be directed to the police, declining to comment on Saturday's incident.
The lower house of Parliament will be put to a vote on October 27. Some politicians who have been involved in scandals are running as independents after losing the backing of the ruling party. In an attempt to project a new image, the party just elected Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba as its new leader. Though it's still unknown if it will lose its majority hold on the lower house in the next election due to the fractured opposition, polls indicate that its popularity is falling.
As is comparatively uncommon in Japanese culture, some candidates have been heckled. Japan has been dominated by the Liberal Democrats for the past few decades. After the devastation of World War II, they are credited with guiding Japan to become an economic powerhouse.
In 2022, then-prime minister Shinzo Abe was killed while speaking in a parliamentary election on behalf of a candidate from the ruling party. Using a homemade weapon, the murderer claimed he was angry with Abe as he believed Abe was associated with the Unification Church, which his mother had donated all of the family's money to. Some politicians from the ruling party still maintain these connections.
