Congress MLA Babu Jandel from Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh, is facing a case for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Bhagwan Shiva, which reportedly offended the religious sentiments of Hindus, a police official said on Saturday.
The FIR was registered late Friday night at Tukoganj police station in Indore, following a complaint lodged by Anil Naidu, convener of the legal cell of the Vishva Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) Malwa Prant (Indore-Ujjain division) and a lawyer. The case has been filed under sections 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 302 (intentionally hurting someone's religious feelings) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the official confirmed.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Hansraj Singh explained to PTI that an FIR had already been registered in Sheopur over Jandel’s alleged remarks about Bhagwan Shiva, and the case filed in Indore would be attached to that original FIR.
Naidu, citing a video that surfaced on social media and media outlets, alleged in his complaint that Jandel had used offensive language against Bhagwan Shiva, claiming it "hurt the religious sentiments of crores of Hindus like him."
In response to the case filed in Sheopur on Thursday, Jandel defended himself, stating that the video had been edited and circulated with the intent of damaging his image. The Congress legislator also asserted that he is a "Shiv bhakt" (a devotee of Bhagwan Shiva), dismissing the allegations.
Eyewitnesses reported that VHP workers held a protest outside Indore's Tukoganj police station late Friday night, demanding a case be filed against the MLA. The protest ended only after the police agreed to register the FIR against Jandel, according to those present at the scene.
