Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented a copy of the 'white paper' on the Indian economy during the UPA government to Parliament. The government included the tabling of the 'White Paper on Indian Economy' in the Lok Sabha's supplementary agenda.
The budget session, which marks the final Parliament session before the Lok Sabha polls expected in April-May this year, is scheduled to conclude on February 10. The Centre and the Opposition engaged in a verbal exchange after the Congress released a 'black paper' against the BJP.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sarcastically referred to the Congress's allegations as a 'kaala teeka' amidst the positive initiatives undertaken by his government. This remark followed the government's announcement of its intention to present a 'white paper' on the "mismanagement" of the economy before 2014.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi honoured former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. During the farewell ceremony for several retiring members, including Singh, the Prime Minister acknowledged Singh's immense contributions.
He stated, "I want to remember Dr. Manmohan Singh. For such a long time, the way he has guided this House and Country, Dr. Manmohan Singh will always be remembered for it."
The Congress released a "black paper" criticizing the Modi government, alleging 10 years of "injustice" and "discrimination" against non-BJP states. Titled '10 saal anyay kaal', it highlighted issues like rising prices, unemployment, institutional subversion, and farmers' distress.
Congress president Malllikarjun Kharge presented the 54-page "charge sheet" ahead of the government's planned tabling of a 'white paper' on pre-2014 economy mismanagement in Parliament.
The government stated in the white paper that it faced a crisis situation, highlighting the significant responsibility to gradually repair the economy and establish order in governance systems.
The white paper stated that the NDA government chose not to release a white paper on the poor state of affairs at the time. It explained that doing so would have created a negative narrative and undermined confidence, including that of investors. The primary goal was to instill hope among the people, attract domestic and global investments, and garner support for necessary reforms.
The white paper emphasized that the Narendra Modi-led government prioritizes the nation's interests over scoring political points. It stated that after stabilizing the economy and steering it towards recovery and growth, it's important to disclose the significant challenges left behind by the UPA Government.
