A major clash broke out between protesting farmers and police in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district, creating a tense situation outside the District Administration Office. The protest was linked to opposition against land acquisition by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) in Jangamakote Hobli of Shidlaghatta taluk.
Farmers had been holding an indefinite protest against the land acquisition process, expressing concerns over the loss of their livelihoods. The situation escalated when police intervened to control the gathering. This led to serious allegations from the farmers, who claimed that they were manhandled during the process. Reports also suggested that some protestors were dragged by their collars, further intensifying anger among the farming community.
Speaking on behalf of the protestors, Kumar, one of the farmers, criticised the lack of response from authorities. He said, "We have repeatedly requested the district minister and MLA to visit the spot and accept our memorandum, but they have not responded. Today, more than 500 police personnel were deployed, and a lathi charge was carried out." His statement reflected the frustration among farmers who felt ignored despite repeated appeals.
The clash resulted in injuries to two farmers. One of them sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. The incident has raised concerns about the handling of protests and the use of force by authorities in sensitive situations involving livelihoods.
Farmers also expressed strong dissatisfaction with the district administration. They alleged that genuine farmers are being ignored while support is being extended to what they described as “fake farmers.” According to them, officials have failed to understand the realities on the ground, which has deepened mistrust between the administration and the local community.
Amid the ongoing tensions over land acquisition, the issue of basic necessities has also come into focus. The Karnataka government is facing criticism over its handling of drinking water supply. Bharatiya Janata Party leader R. Ashoka has raised concerns about the situation and urged the ruling Indian National Congress government to take immediate action.
Addressing a press conference, Ashoka demanded that the government release Rs 10 crore as a grant for drinking water in every Assembly constituency. He suggested that the funds should be used to rejuvenate borewells and ensure water supply through tankers. He also highlighted the need to support livestock by constructing goshalas, or cattle shelters, and providing adequate fodder.
He said, "The government has not released even a single paisa for drinking water. Salaries of employees have been cut in Telangana and Himachal Pradesh. Karnataka, too, is showing signs of heading in the same direction. The government should release Rs 10 crore per Assembly constituency exclusively for drinking water. This money should be used for rejuvenating borewells and supplying water through tankers. Goshalas (cattle shelters) should be constructed immediately, and fodder should be supplied to livestock. According to the Meteorological Department's report, rainfall will be deficient this year. If the government cannot do these things, then the ministers should just stay in Delhi. If they spend the remaining two years in Delhi, the state's development will be impossible."
Ashoka further stressed that the demand for water is increasing across the state. He criticised the government strongly, saying that it is failing to address urgent public needs. He also accused ministers of prioritising visits to Delhi instead of focusing on local issues. According to him, if such priorities continue, it would severely impact the state’s development.
The situation in Chikkaballapur highlights growing tensions around land acquisition and basic resource management. While farmers continue to protest to protect their livelihoods, the political debate over governance and resource allocation is also intensifying in Karnataka.
