The Faizabad Bar Association has decided that none of its members will represent the eight people accused in the Ram temple donation embezzlement case. The association also warned that any lawyer who appears on behalf of the accused will have to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh. The decision came on Monday during the general body meeting of the Bar Association. The meeting took place on the same day the accused were scheduled to appear before a local court.
The Bar Association had already indicated on Sunday that its members were unlikely to defend the accused. Lawyers said the alleged theft of donations offered at the Ram temple had deeply affected their emotions. They believed that appearing for the accused would go against the sentiments of the legal community in Faizabad.
Bar Association secretary Shailendra Jaiswal confirmed the decision after the meeting. He said, "The theft of temple offerings has hurt our sentiments." He further added, "The arrested accused's attorneys in Faizabad have decided not to enter a plea on their behalf." Jaiswal also said that the Bar president and the general body jointly approved the resolution. He stated that the association would decide its future course of action later.
Apart from refusing legal representation to the accused, the Bar Association also decided to take legal action against senior officials linked to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. According to The Indian Express, the lawyers resolved to file a case against Gopal Rao, who is in charge of temple construction, trust member Anil Mishra, and the trust's general secretary, Champat Rai.
During the meeting, lawyers also demanded that the three officials leave Ayodhya within three days. They warned that they would organise a siege of the temple town if their demand was ignored. They also threatened to stop anyone from entering Ayodhya if the officials continued to remain there.
The development follows the arrest of key temple staff and trust executives after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) uncovered major financial irregularities. The investigation reportedly found that large amounts of gold, silver, and cash worth several crores had gone missing. The findings led to the arrest of several people connected with the temple administration.
The Bar Association's decision is significant as it directly affects the legal defence available to the accused. The move also reflects the strong reaction among local lawyers over the alleged misuse of donations offered by devotees at the Ram temple. The association has made it clear that any member who violates its resolution will face a financial penalty of Rs 5 lakh.
The case continues to attract public attention as the investigation into the alleged embezzlement moves forward. Authorities are examining the financial irregularities uncovered by the SIT, while the legal and administrative developments surrounding the case continue to unfold.
