A strong explosion occurred at an explosives plant in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday, killing 12 people and injuring five others, officials said. Shards of glass and metal were scattered around the plant, with ambulances standing by, according to AFP.
Ismail Ustaoglu, the local governor, confirmed that the explosion occurred in Balikesir province's Karesi district. "According to initial reports, 12 employees died, and four other were hospitalised with injuries." He expressed condolences, saying, "I wish God's mercy upon our deceased citizens and a speedy recovery to our wounded," he said. The number of injured was later updated to five, and officials confirmed that their injuries were not serious. Authorities also stated that no employees were inside the factory when the explosion happened, and the fire has been put out.
Part of the plant collapsed as a result of the blast's force, which occurred at 8:25 a.m. (05:25 GMT). The cause of the explosion is still unknown, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, who stated, "We are trying to determine what caused it." Local authorities proposed "technical reasons" as a possible explanation, but additional investigations is being done. Prosecutors are looking into the situation thoroughly, and authorities have ruled out sabotage. Speaking on the social media site X, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "I am deeply saddened by the death of 12 brothers." Having been briefed by pertinent organisations, he noted, he was given a directive that "a comprehensive investigation be initiated immediately."
The facility, which is situated in northern Balikesir, manufactures flares, explosives, and ammunition for both local and foreign markets. In their descriptions of the explosion's aftermath, witnesses said the region appeared "like a battlefield." To prevent citizens and the media from approaching in the event of a second explosion, security personnel have surrounded the area. The plant in northern Balikesir manufactures munitions, explosives, and flares for use both in the country and abroad. After the explosion, witnesses said the scene resembled a battlefield. Security forces have cordoned off the area to keep civilians and the press away, fearing the possibility of another explosion.
