Suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir has sparked a fresh political controversy in West Bengal after making serious allegations against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The issue gained wider attention after BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya shared a video in which Kabir is heard claiming that he was instructed by Mamata Banerjee to make communal statements during the election period to help a party candidate.
In the video, Humayun Kabir says that Mamata Banerjee gave him clear directions to ensure the electoral victory of TMC leader Yusuf Pathan. According to Kabir, he was told to make statements that would influence the election outcome. He claims that in order to follow those instructions, he made provocative and anti-Hindu remarks during the campaign.
Kabir is heard saying that one such speech was delivered on 1st May 2024 at around 7 pm, while another controversial statement was made on 30th April 2024. He claims these remarks were not personal views but were made under instructions from senior leadership. The video shared by Amit Malviya has since gone viral and has triggered strong political reactions across the state.
After the video surfaced, Humayun Kabir publicly apologised for his remarks. Addressing a large gathering, he said he was sorry for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. He expressed regret and said he apologised to his “Hindu brothers and sisters” for the statements he had made earlier. Kabir stated that his comments had caused pain and misunderstanding, and he admitted that the language he used was wrong.
Kabir’s latest claims have also brought renewed focus on his earlier controversial remarks made during a booth workers’ meeting in Shaktipur, located in Murshidabad district. At that meeting, he had made strong and threatening comments targeting the Hindu community. He had said, “If you are 70%, we are 30%,” and went on to warn that they would be “drowned in the Bhagirathi River within two hours.” These remarks had earlier drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and civil society.
In the same speech, Kabir had also spoken about the Kazipada mosque. He had said that if anyone believed the mosque could be demolished and Muslims would remain silent, “this will never happen.” These statements were widely criticised and were seen as highly provocative and divisive.
The fresh claims made by Kabir have now intensified the political storm in West Bengal. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a sharp attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government. BJP leaders have described the matter as a clear example of what they call “extreme appeasement politics.” They have demanded answers from the TMC leadership regarding Kabir’s remarks and his claim that he acted on instructions from the top.
BJP leaders have also questioned why such statements were allowed during the election period and whether action will be taken against those allegedly involved in directing such remarks. The party has said that the allegations raise serious questions about the conduct of the ruling party during elections.
So far, the Trinamool Congress has not issued a detailed response to Humayun Kabir’s latest statements or the video shared by Amit Malviya. However, the controversy continues to dominate political discussions in the state, with both sides trading accusations. The matter remains at the centre of debate, as political tensions continue to rise in West Bengal over the issue.
