Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stirred controversy on Wednesday by stating that even divine intervention could not instantly fix Bengaluru's worsening traffic and infrastructure issues. His remark drew criticism on social media, with many accusing the ruling Congress government of failing to address delayed projects and ongoing traffic issues.
"Bengaluru can't be changed in two or three years. Even God can't do that. It can be changed only when proper planning is done and executed well," Mr Shivakumar stated.
Speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on road construction, Mr Shivakumar's remarks come amid growing concerns from Bengaluru residents and urban planners about worsening traffic, delays in metro expansion, and insufficient public transport. Critics claim that while ambitious infrastructure projects have been declared, their execution remains sluggish and unstable.
Economist and Aarin Capital chairman Mohandas Pai questioned Shivakumar’s statement, challenging the government's advancement in improving Bengaluru's infrastructure.
"Minister DK Shivakumar, it has been two years since you became our Minister! We applauded and welcomed you as a strong Minister. But our lives have become much worse!" Mr Pai posted on.
Mr Pai argued that main infrastructure projects are still unfinished, footpaths are in bad shape, and public transport remains insufficient. He urged swift action, including the immediate acquisition of 5,000 new electric buses, efforts to make the city cleaner and more pedestrian-friendly and 24/7 work on metro expansion.
The opponent BJP also condemned Mr Shivakumar's remarks and accused the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka of severe incompetence.
"It is very unfortunate that the person who said he would make 'Brand Bengaluru' has said even God cannot fix this. Then who can?" Mohan Krishna, BJP leader, briefed NDTV.
"God has given an opportunity to a person or a party to serve the people. It is unfortunate that this government has indulged in many activities other than development."
Later, Mr Shivakumar stated that his government had published a road handbook to resolve all pending issues in Karnataka's capital, including plans for new road designs and bus stands to ease severe traffic issues.
