The European Union (EU) has allocated €250,000 (equivalent to over ₹2.26 crore) to assist individuals impacted by a hailstorm and heavy rainfall in Manipur, a northeastern state, during early May. The aid is anticipated to help over 1,500 of the most vulnerable families in the region.
The EU announced on Wednesday that the assistance would be distributed by its humanitarian partner, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), to the hardest-hit areas where those most affected reside.
Priority will be given to the distribution of food and emergency shelter kits to assist those affected whose livelihoods and homes suffered damage from the storm. This aid aims to help communities cope with the storm's impact on their livelihoods and to facilitate the restoration of their homes.
On May 5th, a severe hailstorm struck large areas of Manipur, causing extensive damage to over 48,000 houses, numerous infrastructure projects, and agricultural lands and crops across 16 districts. The storm, which lasted for 15 minutes, produced hailstones measuring four to five inches in diameter. Its intensity led to significant flooding in urban areas and widespread power outages.
The European Union and its member states rank among the leading contributors of humanitarian aid worldwide, according to a statement. Relief assistance reflects European solidarity with individuals in need across the globe.
Funding from the EU is being provided through the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operation (ECHO) department of the European Commission. With its headquarters in Brussels and a network of field offices worldwide, the EU assists victims of conflict and disasters annually, delivering aid to the most vulnerable individuals based on humanitarian requirements.
