On Tuesday, India denounced the Bangladesh court’s ruling which ordered the arrest of a Hindu priest named Chinmoy Krishna Das.
The Ministry of External Affairs expressed concern about the arrest. "We have noted with deep concern the arrest and denial of bail to Shri Chinmoy Krishna Das, who is also the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote," said MEA in a statement. “This incident follows the multiple attacks on Hindus and other minorities by extremist elements in Bangladesh. There are several documented cases of arson and looting of minorities' homes and business establishments, as well as theft and vandalism and desecration of deities and temples,” it added.
“It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of these incidents remain at large, charges should be pressed against a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings. We also note with concern the attacks on minorities protesting peacefully against the arrest of Shri Das,” the MEA further said. “We urge Bangladesh authorities to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities, including their right of freedom of peaceful assembly and expression,” read the statement.
On Tuesday, a Bangladeshi court passed a ruling which denied the bail plea of Krishna Das, a leader of the Hindu organisation Sammilita Sanatani Jote and ordered to jail him. “The court of Chattogram Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam issued the order around 11:45 am on Tuesday,” a Bangladeshi news website Bdnews24 reported. Bangladesh police arrested Krishna Das on Monday near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. According to a news portal, his followers protested at the court premises, chanting slogans after he was denied bail.
Police Detective Branch spokesperson Rezaul Karim stated, "Das was detained in line with a request from (regular police)." However, the charges were not disclosed at the time of the arrest. The Bdnews24 news portal said on Monday that Gaurang Das Brahmachari, the main organiser of Sanatani Jagran Jote, was supposed to travel by plane from Dhaka to Chattogram. Das was one of 19 persons charged for disrespecting Bangladesh's national flag at a Hindu community protest in Chattogram's New Market neighbourhood on October 30. The case was filed at the Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram.
