Elon Musk revealed yesterday that he will start shifting a significant part of his attention back to Tesla, due to increasing pressure from investors to become more active in the initiatives. Speaking at Tesla's earnings call with analysts, Musk also confirmed that he would serve in his governmental advisory role for a shorter time.
Musk said that beginning in May, he would significantly cut back on the time he spends at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he serves as a special government employee (SGE). The clarification came following a social media user on X, formerly Twitter. When asked if he was stepping down, Musk replied, “Not stepping down, just reducing time allocation now that @DOGE is established.”
This comes amid increased public backlash of Musk's SGE position, which has restricted his government-related activities to a maximum of 130 days per year. According to Fortune, based on the calendar year, Musk was to serve between 126-and 162 days in that role, which means roughly 36 weeks.
Musk's announcement to focus more on Tesla has come at a time when shareholders have urged him to focus on their expanding portfolio of innovations. These include autonomous robotaxi fleets, artificial intelligence-driven humanoid robots, and the long-promised rollout of fully unsupervised self-driving capabilities.
Musk clearly addressed all these worries during the course of the earnings call. “Probably starting next month, in May, my time allocation at DOGE will drop significantly. I’ll have to continue doing it. I think we have the remainder of the President’s term just to make sure that the waste and fraud that we stopped does not come roaring back, which it’ll do if it has the chance,” Musk said.
He said that he will spend “a day or two per week on government matters for as long as the President would like me to do so, as long as it is useful.”
“But starting next month, I will be allocating far more of my time to Tesla now that the major work of establishing the Department of Government Efficiency is done,” Musk noted.
