The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty has clearly angered Pakistan. Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), stated that Pakistan is the rightful protector of the Indus civilisation and warned India that "either our water or their blood will flow through it."
"The Indus is ours and will remain ours. Either our water will flow through it, or their blood will," Bhutto said at a public rally on Friday, raising tensions between India and Pakistan through his hatred remark on the Pahalgam terror attack. The treaty, signed in September 1960 after many years of talks, decides how the waters of six rivers in the Indus basin are shared between India and Pakistan. If the treaty is suspended, it could cause huge problems for Pakistan in the future, since the rivers supply water to 80% of its farmland.
Criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bhutto said that neither Pakistan nor the international community would accept his "warmongering" or any attempt to stop Pakistan’s share of the Indus waters. "He (Modi) says they are heirs to a civilisation thousands of years old, but that civilisation lies in Mohenjo-Daro, in Larkana. We are its true custodians, and we will defend it," Bhutto said. The Indus Valley Civilisation actually covered areas that are now part of both Pakistan and large parts of western India.
Bhutto is the second Pakistani leader, after Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, to criticise PM Modi following his powerful speech at a rally in Bihar earlier this week. PM Modi pledged to "identify, track, and punish" all terrorists and their supporters and to "pursue them to the ends of the earth" in a firm message to Pakistan.
Bhutto, who has also been Pakistan’s foreign minister, said that Pakistan had already condemned the terror attack, which killed 26 tourists, but India was blaming Pakistan to hide the failures of its own government. "India is unlawfully abrogating the treaty under which it had acknowledged that the Indus belongs to Pakistan," he further said. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri called Bhutto a "fool" and said that Pakistan would face serious consequences for the Pahalgam attack. "There was a terrorist attack in Pahalgam... Pakistan will have to pay the price for it. This is just the beginning. Bilawal Bhutto is a fool... if he doesn't get water, he will keep shouting like this," Puri said.
Piyush Goyal, another Union Minister, stated that India will not be alarmed by Pakistan's threats. "Pakistan has no priority other than spreading terrorism... even the people of Pakistan will not agree with such statements," Goyal said.
