Police reported that eight Naxalites and one Special Task Force (STF) jawan were killed during an encounter in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district. Two additional STF personnel were injured in the incident.
Police officials reported the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and other materials belonging to Naxalites from the encounter site. According to a senior police official in Raipur, the gunfight erupted in the morning within the forest of Abhujmad.
A joint team of security personnel from four districts — Narayanpur, Kanker, Dantewada, and Kondagaon — had been conducting an anti-Naxalite operation in the area.
The operation, which included personnel from the state police's District Reserve Guard (DRG) and STF, along with the 53rd battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and 135th battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF), commenced on June 12. It targeted the forests surrounding Kutul, Farsebeda, and Kodtameta villages, according to officials.
The exchange of fire began as security personnel were cordoning off the area and continued for an extended period, according to officials.
Once the gunfire ceased, authorities recovered the bodies of eight Naxalites from the site. Additionally, they seized an Insas rifle, a .303 rifle, a barrel grenade launcher (BGL), and various other weapons and materials associated with Maoists, the official reported.
"A jawan of the STF lost his life, and two others were injured," he confirmed. The injured soldiers were transferred to a nearby hospital and are scheduled to be airlifted to Raipur for additional medical treatment, he added.
Police reported that security personnel have killed a total of 131 Naxalites in various encounters across Bastar division this year. The division includes Kanker, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Bastar, Bijapur, Dantewada, and Sukma districts.
On June 5, security forces gunned down six Naxalites in an encounter in Narayanpur. Earlier, on May 23, seven Naxalites were killed on the Narayanpur-Bijapur border. Another major encounter on May 10 in Bijapur resulted in the deaths of at least 12 Naxalites.
Prior to this, on April 30, security forces neutralised 10 Naxal cadres, including three women, along the border of Narayanpur and Kanker districts. On April 16, a significant operation in Kanker district led to the killing of 29 Naxalites in an encounter with security forces.
