In a brutal targeted killing, editor of Rising Kashmir, Kashmir valley-based newspaper, was shot dead earlier today outside his office. Two body guards deployed for his security were also shot dead. Bukhari had escaped attempts on his life previously and had been given police protection since 2000. In a targeted killing, on eve of Eid, Bukhari was shot with multiple bullets from close range According to sources, terrorists on a motorcycle shot him and his security guards from close range.
According to the J&K Police, it was a planned terror attack, where terrorists waited for him outside his office. As soon as he left office to head home terrorists opened fire and killed him on the spot. The terrorists chose holy month of Ramzaan, and that too iftaar time to attack Shujaat Bukhari. This has been a bloody month since Government of India announced a unilateral ceasefire in the month of Ramzaan.
Anguished voices have condemned the brutal killing of Bukhari and many have also questioned the wisdom of unilateral ceasefire which has only seen death and destruction in the month of Ramazan. No terrorist organization has taken responsibility of the attack.
Shujaat Bukhari was senior journalist who was actively involved in organizing conferences and meetings about Kashmir Issue. He was also part of Track 2 dialogue process with Pakistan.
