The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized ₹1.5 crore from a chit fund company owned by Kerala businessman Gokulam Gopalan, who is also one of the producers of the movie 'L2: Empuraan'. The raids were part of an investigation into alleged foreign exchange violations worth ₹1,000 crore. ED officials carried out searches at 10 different locations across Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Action was taken against Gopalan and his company, Sree. During the ED raids, ₹1.5 crore was seized. However, the agency has not yet clarified whether the money was found at Gokulam Gopalan’s premises or at the chit fund offices. Neither the Enforcement Directorate (ED) nor Gokulam Gopalan has officially made any statement yet. The Kochi office of the agency conducted searches at five locations across different states, including Chennai in Tamil Nadu and Kochi in Kerala. These searches were carried out under the rules of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Additionally, the agency is reportedly examining a few "cheating" allegations against the business in preparation for a potential anti-money laundering investigation.
The federal investigation—launched after the recent controversy over L2: Empuraan, the sequel to the film Lucifer—has faced strong criticism from both Kerala's ruling LDF and the opposition Congress-led UDF. LDF convener T.P. Ramakrishnan, while speaking to the media during the CPI(M) party congress in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, said that the raids on Gopalan’s companies were a "cheap tactic" meant to interfere in Kerala’s cultural scene. He urged artists and the cultural community to stand together against such actions, calling them an attack on the freedom of the creative world. Similar remarks were made by V D Satheesan, the Assembly's leader of the opposition, who said, "The raids happened only after the movie came out." "Everyone knows the raids were conducted because he is one of the producers of 'L2: Empuraan'," he stated.
The film has faced strong criticism from the Sangh Parivar for certain scenes that allegedly criticise right-wing politics and subtly refer to the Gujarat riots. 'L2: Empuraan' — the second part of the 'Lucifer' trilogy made by Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mohanlal — has become a hot topic of discussion. While the Congress and Left parties praised the film for showing right-wing ideology in a negative light, the Sangh Parivar strongly opposed it on social media when it was released on March 27. Due to the controversy, co-producer Antony Perumbavoor announced on April 1 that just over two minutes of the film had been cut.
