The Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked the Haryana government to provide a detailed report by Tuesday noon (January 28) about allegations of increased ammonia levels in the water being supplied from Haryana to Delhi. According to sources, the high ammonia levels in the Yamuna River have reportedly affected the water supply in the national capital.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann jointly filed a representation accusing the BJP-ruled Haryana government of purposefully contaminating Yamuna water in advance of the Delhi assembly polls, which prompted the decision. In a harsh attack on the BJP, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal claimed that the Haryana government had tampered with Delhi's water supply by adding "poison" to the Yamuna water. “Nothing is a bigger sin than depriving people of water. The BJP is trying to leave the people of Delhi thirsty for its dirty politics. They are mixing poison in the water being sent from Haryana. This contaminated water is so toxic that it cannot be treated by the water treatment plants present in Delhi. The BJP wants to commit mass murder of Delhi residents. We will not let this happen,” Kejriwal alleged.
According to Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, the high ammonia level of Yamuna water puts 30% of Delhi residents at risk of a water scarcity. “The ammonia-laden water has pushed three major water treatment plants in Delhi—Wazirabad, Chandrawal, and Okhla—to the brink of shutdown,” she said. "Haryana's actions are politically motivated to impact the upcoming elections," Atishi claimed. Nayab Singh Saini, the chief minister of Haryana, condemned the accusations made by the AAP as "baseless" in his response. "The allegation of polluting Yamuna water is baseless. Yamuna’s pollution is Delhi’s doing. I’ve met people in Haryana who are forced to drink polluted water because of Delhi’s untreated waste. The AAP government is responsible for the 28 drains polluting Yamuna before it even reaches Haryana,” said the Haryana Chief Minister.
He criticised the AAP leader for not cleaning the river, even though it was promised. Additionally, Haryana Minister Anil Vij addressed the matter by referring to Kejriwal as "a factory of lies." “Kejriwal is a factory of lies. Conduct a quality check at the point where our water enters Delhi then compare it with the water quality in Delhi. The difference will be clearly visible. Cleaning the Yamuna in Delhi was Kejriwal's responsibility, which he failed to fulfil," said the minister. The Delhi elections, set for February 5, will see a tough three-way contest between the AAP, BJP and Congress. The ruling AAP, facing corruption allegations, is aiming for a third consecutive victory.
