In a firm statement regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asserted that regardless of the complexities involved, the undeniable truth remains that the Palestinians have been deprived of their rights and homeland.
He declared the events of October 7 as a 'terrorist attack' while also recognising the necessity for any response, including the Israeli counteroffensive in Gaza, to adhere to international humanitarian law.
During his visit to Malaysia, Mr. Jaishankar engaged with the Indian community at an event.
Jaishankar highlighted the complexities of the situation, stating, "How different pulls and pressures can be. On one hand, what happened on October 7 was terrorism. On the other hand, nobody would countenance the death of innocent civilians. Countries may be justified in their own minds in responding, but you cannot have a response that...every response must take into account something called international humanitarian law."
He added, "The fact is whatever the rights and wrongs of the issue, there is an underlying issue of the rights of the Palestinians and the fact that they have been denied their homeland."
On October 7, Hamas terror attack in Israel, resulted in the deaths of over 1200 people and the capture of more than 250 individuals as hostages, with over 100 still held in captivity.
Israel responded by launching a robust counteroffensive in the Gaza Strip, targeting Hamas units. However, the operation also resulted in civilian casualties. According to the Gaza ministry, over 32,000 people, including women and children, have been killed in Gaza.
Prime Minister Modi was among the first global leaders to denounce the brutal terrorist assault carried out by Hamas on Israel on October 7.
India has consistently supported the "two-state solution" to the enduring Israel-Palestine conflict.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jaishankar is currently undertaking an official visit to Malaysia, with subsequent visits planned to Singapore and the Philippines.
He concluded his visit after meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and holding a round-table discussion with CEOs in Malaysia, where he expressed appreciation for their interest in partnering with Indian industries.
