External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed the situation in Kashmir, highlighting the Indian government’s actions, including the removal of Article 370, efforts to restore economic growth and social justice, and the successful conduct of elections in the Union Territory, which saw a high voter turnout. He further stated that the only unresolved issue in Jammu and Kashmir is the region illegally controlled by Pakistan. Jaishankar made these remarks while speaking at Chatham House in London.
When asked about the Kashmir issues, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated: "Look in Kashmir; actually, we have done, I think, a good job solving most of it. I think removing Article 370 was one step number one. Then, restoring growth and economic activity and social justice in Kashmir. It was step number two, holding elections, which were done with a very high turnout for step number three. I think the part we are waiting for is the return of the stolen part of Kashmir, which is on the illegal Pakistani occupation. When that's done, I assure you. Kashmir solved."
On May 9, 2024, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is an integral part of India. He also stated that every Indian political party is committed to bringing POK back under India’s control.
Interacting with students of Gargi College, Delhi University, EAM Jaishankar conveyed, "All I can say about POK is that there a Parliament resolution...every political party of this country is committed to ensuring that POK, which is a part of India, returns to India. That is our national commitment."
He also stated that the removal of Article 370 in August 2019 allowed people to consider the issue of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir more openly. "Because we have finally taken the right decision of Article 370, the POK issue has come to the front of people's thinking. The first pre-requisite for something happening is that it should be in your thoughts," said Jaishankar.
On May 5, 2024, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar stated that POK is a part of India and that individuals were "made to forget" this fact. While answering a question about India’s plans for POK at an event in Cuttack, Odisha, he asserted, "POK has never been out of this country. It is part of this country. There is a resolution of the Indian Parliament that POK is very much a part of India." He further mentioned that India did not ask Pakistan to vacate the region in the "early years of independence," which allowed the "sorry state of affairs" to persist.
"When you have someone who is not a responsible custodian of the house, bahar se koi chori kar leta hai (someone steals from outside)," EAM S. Jaishankar stated.
The External Affairs Minister stated that the issue of POK was "made to forget" by the people, but it has now been brought back into public awareness.
