India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar met with Prime Minister Luc Frieden of Luxembourg on Tuesday. The meeting was held to focus on boosting cooperation between India and Luxembourg and strengthening India’s ties with the European Union (EU).
During their discussion, both leaders talked about expanding cooperation in important areas such as financial services, investments, technology, and innovation. These sectors were highlighted as key areas where India and Luxembourg can work more closely together as part of the broader India-EU partnership.
After the meeting, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar shared details of the talks on X. In his post, he wrote, “Pleased to meet Prime Minister @LucFrieden of Luxembourg this morning. Conveyed warm greetings of PM @narendramodi. Discussed our growing cooperation in financial services, investments, technology & innovation. Thank him for his support for stronger India-EU ties.”
This comment by Jaishankar made clear that he conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Prime Minister Luc Frieden and thanked him for Luxembourg’s backing in strengthening relations between India and the European Union.
The meeting in Luxembourg was part of Dr Jaishankar’s official visit to France and Luxembourg, which spans several days. Before arriving in Luxembourg, he held important discussions in Paris, France, on global and bilateral issues, underlining the wider diplomatic purpose of the visit.
On Monday, before travelling to Luxembourg, the External Affairs Minister met with Fatih Birol, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), in Paris. Their discussion focused on key global energy topics, such as oil markets and nuclear energy. Talking about that meeting on X, Jaishankar said, “Pleased to meet Executive Director @IEA @fbirol this morning. Appreciate his assessment of the global energy scenario and his support for India’s growth and development.”
Fatih Birol also shared his views on the interaction on his social media account. He described his meeting with Jaishankar as “warm and productive” and outlined that their talks covered global energy challenges. He said, “We spoke about global energy issues, including oil markets, nuclear power & critical minerals, as well as India’s strong commitment to become a full @IEA Member.”
In addition to these official engagements, Jaishankar participated in other diplomatic interactions during his time in Paris. He met with participants of the French-Indian Young Talents Program, which was organised by the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie Franco-Indienne. Reflecting on the discussions, Jaishankar said that the talks focused on “the transformations underway in the world and the importance of India-France collaboration in that context.”
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), during his overall visit to France and Luxembourg, Jaishankar is also due to meet with other French and Luxembourg leaders, and he will engage with members of the Indian community in Luxembourg.
India and Luxembourg have had warm and friendly relations for many years. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were first established in 1948. Luxembourg opened its embassy in New Delhi in February 2002 and also maintains honorary consuls in several Indian cities, including Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru.
Dr Jaishankar’s visit highlights India’s commitment to deepening its strategic and diplomatic ties with European partners, especially as negotiations with the European Union on a long-pending Free Trade Agreement (FTA) enter a decisive phase. Strengthening cooperation on trade, investment, technology, and other shared priorities remains central to India’s engagement with the EU and its member states.
