On Thursday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with his South Korean counterpart, Cho Tae-yul, over the phone. During their conversation, Jaishankar emphasised the importance of fighting against terrorism in all its forms.
During the call, Jaishankar also expressed his gratitude to South Korea for its support and solidarity following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In a post shared on X, Jaishankar stated, "Spoke with @FMChoTaeyul of South Korea this morning. Thanked him for RoK's support and solidarity in light of Pahalgam terror attack. Underlined the need to combat terrorism in all forms and manifestations." On April 22, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam left 26 people dead and many others injured after the attackers targeted tourists at Baisaran meadow. In response to this attack, India has taken strong action against Pakistan for supporting cross-border terrorism. During a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by PM Narendra Modi on April 23, India decided to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960.
This suspension will continue until Pakistan takes credible and permanent steps to stop supporting cross-border terrorism and close the integrated Attari Check Post. India has declared certain officials of the Pakistani High Commission as persona non grata and instructed them to leave the country within a week. The government also decided to cancel all visas given under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) and ordered Pakistani officials to depart within 48 hours. According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, India has suspended visa services for Pakistani nationals immediately. All existing valid visas issued to Pakistani citizens will be revoked starting from April 27, 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the nation that those responsible for the recent attack, as well as those who planned it, will face punishment beyond what they can imagine.
"The terrorists responsible for this attack, along with those who conspired it, will face punishment beyond their imagination," Prime Minister Modi said during a speech on April 24 in Madhubani, Bihar, emphasising that the time has come to eradicate the remaining terrorist strongholds. "The willpower of 140 crore Indians will now break the backbone of the perpetrators of terror," the Prime Minister stated.
He reaffirmed that India received support from everyone who has faith in mankind. He further stated, "We will identify, track, and punish every terrorist, their handlers, and their backers, pursuing them to the ends of the earth. India's spirit will never be broken by terrorism, and terrorism will not go unpunished. Every effort will be made to ensure justice is served, and the entire nation is firm in this resolve against terrorism."
