External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Tuesday underscored the critical role of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership in fostering regional peace, international stability, and global prosperity. Addressing the 7th India-Japan Indo-Pacific Forum and the 10th India-Japan Track 1.5 Dialogue, Jaishankar highlighted Japan’s significant contributions to India’s economic development and called for deeper collaboration in areas such as clean energy, semiconductors, and broader economic cooperation.
Speaking at the event, Jaishankar praised Japan’s investment commitment of 5 trillion yen by 2027 as a testament to its importance in India’s growth story. However, he noted that current trade figures between the two nations remain below potential. “Trade figures still fall below expectations,” he remarked, urging stronger economic ties to address global uncertainties.
Jaishankar highlighted the alignment between India’s Act East Policy and Japan’s vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. He called for ambitious joint efforts in promoting regional stability, especially through shared initiatives like the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI). Japan, as a co-leader in maritime trade, transport, and connectivity under the IPOI, plays a crucial role in realising these goals.
“Our partnership is built on trust and has been growing stronger over the past decade,” Jaishankar stated in his virtual address. “As we expand common interests and forge new collaborations, particularly in areas like clean energy and semiconductor supply chains, we aim to promote a resilient global economy, reliable supply chains, and sustainable growth.”
On defence cooperation, Jaishankar pointed to the increasing frequency of defence exchanges and joint military exercises as evidence of progress. He stressed the importance of advancing cooperation in defence equipment and technology, signalling a new chapter in strategic relations.
The minister also called for enhancing people-to-people connections, particularly in education, tourism and skilled labour exchanges. He expressed optimism about Japan’s recent initiatives in these areas, which he believes hold great promise for further strengthening bilateral ties.
Reflecting on the historical roots of the India-Japan relationship, Jaishankar noted that their partnership dates back to the 6th century, with the introduction of Buddhism to Japan from India. Over the years, the relationship has grown steadily, culminating in the establishment of a "Global Partnership" during Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori’s visit to India in 2000.
Jaishankar’s remarks highlight the ever-growing significance of India and Japan’s cooperation, underscoring their shared vision for a prosperous and peaceful Indo-Pacific and their commitment to advancing global sustainability.
