External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday criticised the Congress party, saying they were “uncomfortable with history,” while talking about India’s decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty after the terror attack in Pahalgam.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar pointed to what he called Congress’s “mistakes” in the way the treaty was handled, and stressed how important this agreement was.
“The Indus Water Treaty in so many ways is a highly unusual treaty. I do not think there is any treaty in the world where one country has permitted their major rivers to flow to the neighbouring country without having rights over that river. To remind you of the history of this incident. Yesterday, I was told people, certain people, are not happy with history. They want historical things to be forgotten. Perhaps it does not appeal to them, they only like to remember certain things,” Jaishankar said.
He criticised former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for what he had said in Parliament in 1960 about the treaty.
“On 30th November 1960. He (Jawaharlal Nehru) declares I would like to know whether this house is to determine the size of supply of water or money to be provided. People resisted that. PM also uttered, 'Let me do this treaty for the interest of Pakistani Punjab, not a word about farmers of Kashmir or Punjab. Not a word about Rajasthan or Gujarat,” Jaishankar said.
He further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “corrected” what Nehru had done wrong in the context of the Indus Water Treaty and Article 370.
“We were informed for 60 years that nothing could be done. Pandit Nehru's error cannot be rectified. The Narendra Modi government demonstrated that it can be rectified. Article 370 was rectified, and IWT is being rectified. The Indus Water Treaty will remain in abeyance until Pakistan irrevocably relinquishes its patronage of terrorism. We have cautioned that blood and water will not flow together,” he stated.
The government had decided to suspend the Indus Water Treaty after the terror attack in Pahalgam in April, in which 26 people were killed.
