In the 2023 Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) Elections, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) which is affiliated with the RSS has secured victory in three central panel positions, including the coveted President's seat. Meanwhile, the hopes of the Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India (NSUI) to regain control of the DUSU faced another setback, with their lone success being the Vice President's post.
Tushar Dhedha, representing ABVP, clinched the President's position, triumphing over his NSUI opponent, Hitesh Gulia, with an impressive margin of 3115 votes. Apart from the President's post, ABVP's Aprajita secured the Secretary position with a substantial lead of 12,937 votes, and Sachin Baisala emerged victorious as the Joint Secretary, garnering 9995 votes more than his closest competitor.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju extended his congratulations to ABVP for their resounding success in the DUSU elections. Rijiju also took the opportunity to direct criticism towards Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who had actively campaigned in the elections.
“ABVP sweeps DUSU… Rahul Gandhi campaigned in Delhi University Students Union Election which helped ABVP to increase its vote share! Congratulations to all the Winning Candidates of ABVP, it’s cadres as well as all the wishers!,” Rijiju wrote on X.
As per the university administration's report, a total of 24 candidates vied for the four key positions in the Delhi University student elections.
Representing ABVP, Tushar Dedha contested for the President's position, Sushant Dhankar for Vice President, Aparajita for Secretary, and Sachin Bainsla for Joint Secretary.
On the Congress-supported NSUI front, Hitesh Gulia ran for the President's post, Abhi Dahiya for Vice President, Yakshna Sharma for Secretary, and Shubham Chaudhary for the Joint Secretary role at Delhi University.
Notably, the DUSU elections witnessed a 42 percent voter turnout, with a significant number of students exercising their right to vote. This election marked a return after a three-year hiatus, with the last DUSU elections occurring in 2019-20. The extended break was attributed to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
