The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has introduced a new indigenous assault rifle named 'Ugram,' designed to fulfill the operational needs of the armed forces, paramilitary units, and state police entities.
Developed in partnership with a private industry collaborator, the 'Ugram' rifle, featuring a caliber of 7.62 x 51 mm, was officially presented at the DRDO's Armament and Combat Engineering Systems in Pune. The operational prototype, boasting an effective range of 500 meters and weighing less than four kilograms, signifies a significant milestone in indigenous arms development.
Dr. S V Gade, Director General (Armament & Combat Engineering Cluster), officially launched the indigenous 7.62x51mm Assault rifle 'UGRAM' at the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE). The unveiling took place in the presence of A Raju, Director (ARDE), senior scientists from the lab, and representatives from the private industry.
This marks a notable achievement in ARDE's efforts in collaboration with the private sector for the development of the advanced assault rifle. The UGRAM assault rifle, developed to fulfill the Army's General Staff Qualitative Requirements (GSQR), adheres to the stipulated criteria of weighing less than 4kg.
Notable features include reliable functioning with in-service ammunition and the use of steel construction for critical components, ensuring durability and user-friendly operations. Prototypes underwent demonstrations by senior officers from the Army and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The rifles received from the manufacturer will undergo rigorous trials conducted by an independent expert committee before advancing to user trials.
The inauguration of the Barrel Manufacturing Facilities for Small Arms took place at the Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE), a leading DRDO laboratory. Dr. S V Gade, Director General of the Armament & Combat Engineering Cluster, officiated the event, with the presence of A Raju, Director of ARDE, and other senior scientists from the lab.
The newly established facility at ARDE is a cutting-edge setup dedicated to the production of small arms barrels. Aligned with the project's goal to become a central hub for barrel manufacturing in India, the facility aims to provide its services to private firms as well.
The Director General emphasized that this facility will serve as a technology hub, contributing to the design, development, and manufacturing of advanced infantry weapon systems by DRDO.
