The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out three flight tests of the advanced 4th generation Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) at Pokhran on October 3 and 4. This system is technically advanced and miniaturised.
High-speed targets were used in the tests, which highlighted the crucial interception parameters of maximum range and maximum altitude. Through approaching, receding, and crossing target engagement scenarios, these development trials demonstrated the weapon system's repeatable hit-to-kill capability.
Two production agencies have been working together in the Development cum Production Partner (DcPP) mode to complete the development of VSHORADS missiles. The successful use of the missiles made possible by DcPPs in these trials has opened the door for early user trials and production in a short amount of time, in keeping with the government led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision of "Aatmanirbhar Bharat."
Developed in-house by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in association with other DRDO laboratories and DcPPs, VSHORADS is a man-portable air defence system. The trio of services has been involved in the project from its inception, taking part in its developmental trials. Rajnath Singh, the Minister of Defence, has congratulated the military, the industry, and the DRDO on the successful development trials. According to him, the military will have an even greater technological advantage against aerial threats thanks to this new missile that is outfitted with contemporary technology.
Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of the DRDO and Secretary of Defense R&D, also congratulated the users, industry partners, and DRDO team on the successful flight tests. The missiles, which have been in development for a few years, are anticipated to fulfill the forces' essential need to target enemy aircraft, drones, and other aerial targets at close range. Although the military depends on Russian Igla missiles for its needs, they have been feeling the need to update their stock for more than ten years.
The Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD) 2024 was addressed in New Delhi earlier on Friday. During his speech, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that India supports peaceful dispute resolution and has worked to foster cooperation among Indo-Pacific countries. “India has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to disputes and has sought to promote cooperation among nations in the Indo-Pacific, with a strong emphasis on the centrality of ASEAN in fostering regional dialogue, stability, and collective growth,” said Rajnath Singh.
Defence Minister also emphasised India's dedication to maintaining the security and safety of the crucial international sea lanes.
