On November 12, 2024, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha. The launch was executed from a mobile articulated launcher, with all subsystems performing as expected and achieving the primary mission objectives.
To monitor the missile's performance, ITR deployed a variety of range sensors, including radar, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry, positioned at different locations to ensure complete coverage of the missile's flight path.
The missile followed the designated flight path using waypoint navigation and demonstrated its ability to perform various manoeuvres at different altitudes and speeds. It is equipped with advanced avionics and software to enhance reliability and performance.
The LRLACM was developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) in Bengaluru, with collaboration from other DRDO laboratories and Indian industries. Bharat Dynamics Limited, Hyderabad, and Bharat Electronics Limited, Bengaluru, are serving as Development-Cum-Production Partners, actively involved in the missile's development and integration. Senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories, along with representatives from the three armed services—the end users of the system—were present to witness the test.
The LRLACM is a Mission Mode Project approved by the Defence Acquisition Council and sanctioned under the Acceptance of Necessity guidelines. It is designed to be launched from both ground-based mobile articulated launchers and frontline naval ships equipped with a universal vertical launch module system.
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh praised DRDO, the Armed Forces, and the Indian industry for the successful maiden flight test, noting that it sets a strong foundation for future indigenous cruise missile development programs. Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also congratulated the entire DRDO team on the achievement of this successful launch.
