Andhra Pradesh has secured a major boost for India’s defence and aerospace sector with the approval of a world-class Aircraft Integration and Flight Testing Complex at Puttaparthi in Sri Sathya Sai district. The facility will be developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and is expected to play a key role in the country’s indigenous combat aircraft programmes.
The project is considered a significant step for India’s defence manufacturing ambitions and will support the development of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme. The upcoming facility is also expected to assist future indigenous combat aircraft and unmanned aerial systems projects being developed in the country.
The project received in-principle approval from the Ministry of Defence after a series of discussions between the Andhra Pradesh government and the Centre. The initiative is in line with the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and also supports Andhra Pradesh’s Defence and Aerospace Policy 4.0, which aims to establish the state as a major destination for aerospace and advanced manufacturing industries.
As part of the approved plan, the Andhra Pradesh government will provide 150 acres of land next to the Puttaparthi runway for the Aircraft Integration and Flight Testing Complex. Another 200 acres will be allocated for a satellite office complex and a residential township connected to the project. These developments are expected to create a dedicated ecosystem for aerospace activities in the region.
The state government has also committed to extending the runway length to 10,000 feet to support advanced aircraft operations. Along with this, critical aviation infrastructure such as an Air Traffic Control tower, navigation aids and meteorological support systems will be developed to ensure smooth flight testing and aviation activities at the facility.
The government will also coordinate with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Indian Air Force and the Ministry of Defence to secure approvals for creating a dedicated Local Flying Zone around the testing facility. This zone will support aircraft trials and other operational requirements linked to the AMCA programme and future aviation platforms.
The proposed complex is expected to become a crucial centre for aircraft assembly, systems integration and flight testing. It will support the development of advanced combat aviation systems being designed within the country and strengthen India’s push for self-reliance in defence technology and aerospace manufacturing.
In another major development linked to the project, the Andhra Pradesh government has authorised the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) to immediately begin the development of industrial land banks around the region. Around 300 acres have been earmarked for private companies that are expected to establish aerospace and defence manufacturing facilities near the testing hub.
Officials believe the integrated aerospace ecosystem planned around the AMCA project will attract major investments across several sectors. These include aircraft systems integration, avionics, propulsion systems, precision engineering, defence electronics manufacturing, unmanned aerial platforms and advanced materials production. The project is expected to encourage large-scale industrial growth in the region over the coming years.
The development is also likely to create opportunities for MSMEs, suppliers, research institutions and skilling centres. Industry partnerships and training initiatives are expected to grow around the aerospace hub, helping create employment and strengthening technical capabilities in the state.
The Government Order related to the project has also authorised the Industries and Commerce Department to execute the required Memorandums of Understanding and coordination mechanisms with ADA, DRDO and the Ministry of Defence. These steps are aimed at ensuring faster implementation and smooth execution of the project in Andhra Pradesh.
With the establishment of the AMCA flight testing and integration complex at Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh has further strengthened its position as an emerging hub for aerospace, defence manufacturing, advanced engineering and next-generation industrial development in India.
