The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and IIT Delhi have collaborated to develop the ABHED bulletproof jacket, designed to provide enhanced protection for soldiers and security personnel in high-risk environments. The Ministry of Defence has highlighted this innovation as a significant advancement in personal armour technology.
The ABHED jacket is engineered to provide 360-degree protection, ensuring comprehensive coverage for the wearer. Despite its full protective capabilities, it is constructed from lightweight materials, allowing for greater comfort during extended wear. The jacket adheres to the stringent standards set by the Indian Army and is designed to be lighter than the maximum allowable weight. Weighing between 8.2 kg and 9.5 kg, its weight varies based on the protection level established by the Bureau of India Standards (BIS).
The jacket is constructed from advanced polymers and boron carbide ceramics, which are both lightweight and durable. Its modular design includes separate armour components for the front and back. The development process involved rigorous testing of materials under high-stress conditions, and the team utilised computer simulations to refine the design further.
This jacket is the product of the DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE), established in 2022. Through this initiative, Indian companies have been selected to manufacture the jackets. Three companies are prepared to begin production, with the DRDO transferring the necessary technology to facilitate this process.
Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, stated that the ABHED jacket exemplifies the successful collaboration between defence research, universities, and industry. He emphasised that this teamwork has significantly contributed to the advancement of military technology in India.
In addition to DRDO's advancements, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a major player in India’s defence industry, has reported remarkable growth. The company's gross revenue has more than doubled, surpassing ₹2,000 crores for the first time. This achievement underscores GSL’s expanding significance in the nation's defence sector.
With an order book of ₹18,562 crores and multiple ongoing projects, including advanced ships for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, GSL is poised for sustained growth. The company's financial success and substantial orders reflect a promising future for this key player in the defense manufacturing sector.
