The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have joined forces to initiate extensive testing of the Cell Broadcast Alert System across India.
"This initiative aims to bolster emergency communication during disasters and prioritize the safety and well-being of our esteemed citizens," said the Ministry of Communications in a press statement.
The Cell Broadcast Alert System is set to undergo rigorous testing across multiple telecom operators. These assessments will occur periodically in various regions across the nation, serving as a means to evaluate the emergency alert broadcasting capabilities of different telcos and cell broadcast systems. This initiative aims to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency alert dissemination.
The Cell Broadcast Alert System technology empowers the distribution of time-sensitive disaster management messages to all mobile devices within designated geographical areas. This communication extends to both residents and visitors, irrespective of their status within the region.
"This ensures that crucial emergency information reaches as many individuals as possible promptly. Government agencies and emergency services employ cell broadcast to keep the public informed about potential threats and to provide vital updates during critical situations," as per the statement.
Cell broadcast finds common applications in the delivery of emergency alerts, including severe weather warnings (such as tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes), public safety messages, evacuation notices, and other vital information.
The technology is currently undergoing testing in various states across India, with Punjab slated as the next state on the testing schedule for September 29, as per the Ministry of Communications.
This technology has been developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT). Emergency alerts have reportedly been tested on the networks of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Reliance Jio, as well as on Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea's networks.
