US President Donald Trump was honoured with the Architect of Peace Award by the Richard Nixon Foundation at a ceremony held in the White House. The award was presented by Richard Nixon’s daughter Tricia Nixon Cox, former national security adviser Robert O’Brien, and Jim Byron, the acting archivist of the United States.
Photos from the event were shared by White House aide Margo Martin on X, formerly known as Twitter. According to the Richard Nixon Foundation’s website, the award was created in 1995 to recognise individuals who reflect Nixon’s “lifelong goal of shaping a more peaceful world.”
After receiving the award, Trump walked with members of the Nixon family through the West Wing colonnade, where he showed them his Presidential Walk of Fame and a picture of Richard Nixon, who had resigned in 1974 after the Watergate scandal.
Trump has often spoken about his efforts to bring peace to conflict zones. He played a major role in brokering the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, which was announced just two days before the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded. Trump has repeatedly said he believes he should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, claiming his actions helped end wars and save millions of lives.
When the Nobel Prize went to Venezuela’s opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, White House communications director Steven Cheung accused the Nobel committee of putting “politics over peace.”
Trump said that he personally called Machado to congratulate her and added that she told him, “I’m accepting this in honour of you, because you really deserved it.”
By receiving the award, Trump became the third American president to be honoured with the Architect of Peace title. Before him, George H.W. Bush received it in 2000 and George W Bush in 2024. Other recipients include Henry Kissinger, who was recognised twice in 1996 and 2022, along with Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, and John McCain.
In 2024, the Foundation also honoured Farah Pahlavi, the widow of Iran’s last Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and their son Reza Pahlavi with the same award.
