DMK MP Kanimozhi filed a privilege motion against Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday, alleging that he insulted Tamil Nadu and its people by calling them uncivilised. She also demanded that he issue an apology. "I strongly condemn Union Education Minister Dhramendra Pradhan for his disgraceful remarks calling Tamil Nadu and its people uncivilised. On behalf of the DMK and 8 crore Tamilians, I demand an immediate apology!" as per her.
Kanimozhi accused Dharmendra Pradhan of falsely claiming that the Tamil Nadu government initially agreed to sign an MoU for the scheme but later changed its stance. She also alleged that he misrepresented a meeting with Tamil Nadu MPs, wrongly stating that they first supported the scheme and then withdrew their support, which she denied. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will now review the privilege motion.
Pradhan had previously criticised the Tamil Nadu government, calling it "dishonest" and accusing it of reversing its stance on implementing the new National Education Policy (NEP). His remarks were met with strong opposition from the DMK.
"They are dishonest, and they are ruining the future of the students of Tamil Nadu. They are doing politics,” he stated.
After the Lok Sabha was adjourned due to protests from DMK leaders, he took back some of the words he had used for Tamil Nadu MPs. Meanwhile, Pradhan called on the Tamil Nadu government to prioritise students' welfare over political differences.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin criticised Pradhan, calling his remarks arrogant. He accused, "You are insulting the people of Tamil Nadu. Does PM Narendra Modi accept this?" Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin criticised Pradhan, calling his remarks arrogant. He accused the Union Minister of insulting the people of Tamil Nadu and questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi endorsed such comments. Aiming Dharmendra Pradhan, Stalin accused him of behaving arrogantly, like a king, and urged him to be mindful of his words.
Meanwhile, the DMK clarified that it had explicitly told the minister, "we cannot accept" the NEP "in full" and that the three-language formula "is not acceptable to Tamil Nadu."
