“Discover Bharat's Incredible Heritage with Agatsya" is a delightful children's book that takes young readers on a fascinating journey through India's rich cultural tapestry. Written by Kaninika Mishra, this book effortlessly combines storytelling with education, making it an excellent tool to introduce children to India's diverse heritage.
The story revolves around Agatsya, a curious nine-year-old boy, and his family as they embark on various adventures to explore different aspects of India's heritage. Each chapter brings forth a unique element, skillfully blending it into Agatsya's everyday life experiences. From discovering the benefits of Yoga and Ayurveda to learning about traditional handicrafts, ancient mathematics, and India's freedom struggle, young readers are immersed in a world of knowledge and tradition.
The book begins with a short introduction to a nine-year old Agastya and the great rishi he is named after. The name Agastya for the protagonist seems to be chosen with care. Naming the character after one of Bharat’s spiritual founding fathers, Maharishi Agastya, the author subtly reignites interest in the legacy of our ancient sages and the stories from our Puranas.
One of the book's greatest strengths is its ability to present complex concepts in a simple and engaging manner. The author masterfully weaves factual information into the storyline, ensuring that children grasp the significance of each heritage element effortlessly. Whether it's explaining the significance of turmeric milk or narrating the process of making khadi, the book cleverly imparts knowledge without overwhelming young readers.
The book's catchy storyline keeps young readers eagerly turning the pages, fostering a sense of curiosity and wonder. It seamlessly integrates education with entertainment, striking the perfect balance to keep children enthralled throughout. The relatable characters, including Agatsya and his family members, make the story accessible and relatable to young readers, enabling them to connect with the narrative on a personal level.
An example of this unique storytelling style is the chapter, ‘Agastya Paints a Story’. In this story, the protagonist’s family visits an elderly family member who is an artist. The nine-year old Agastya is curious about the relationship he has with the relative and asks several questions in the car as they travel to their destination. Since the grand-uncle, Agastya’s family is visiting is a Phad artist, entertaining and relatable interactions in the story help readers understand the rich history of this traditional art in India.
Another story that has been able to present a complex idea in simple language for young readers is the chapter on Ayurveda. The story takes the readers to Kerala where Agastya and his grandmother have gone to an Ayurveda health centre for treatment. The conversation with his grandmother and his various experiences in Kerala provides an easy introduction to Ayurveda for children.
Each chapter ends with a ‘Did You Know’ and ‘Try it Out’ page. These connect the elements discussed in the story and Agastya’s experiences to the real life of the reader. The Did You Know page for the chapter, ‘Agastya Paints a Story,’ has a short, illustrated description of three other traditional arts Pichwai, Thanjavur, and Thangka. The ‘Try it Out’, has a simple Phad art for kids to colour. The Ayurveda story ends with a ‘Did You Know’ that has information about the Charaka and Sushruta, the physicians who contributed the most to Ayurveda. The ‘Try it Out’ page urges the reader to try out Chawanprash.
The illustrations in the book are a visual delight. They beautifully complement the narrative, capturing the essence of each cultural element and bringing them to life on the pages. The vibrant colours and attention to detail make the illustrations captivating and engaging for children, enhancing their overall reading experience.
With its captivating storyline, beautiful illustrations, and an array of intriguing cultural elements, this book is a must-read for children and teens alike. It provides an innovative and enjoyable way to learn about India's incredible legacy, leaving a lasting impression on young minds.
This book can serve as a perfect gift to young children in your family. It can also be a great return gift at children’s birthday parties. The book is published by Ponytale Books which is one of India’s well-known publishers of books for children and teenagers.
