A Dhaka court has instructed the confiscation of 'Sudasadhan,' the Dhanmondi residence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with other properties owned by her family members presently living in exile in India. According to an official, the court has directed the seizure of 124 bank accounts linked to her family. Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Ghalib issued the order on Tuesday after an application was issued by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Sheikh Hasina's late husband, nuclear scientist MA Wazed Miah, was affectionately known as Sudha Miah, and the house 'Sudhasadan' was named in his honour. Apart from Sheikh Hasina, authorities have also seized properties belonging to her family members, including her son Sajib Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, sister Sheikh Rehana, and Rehana’s children, Tulip Siddique and Radwan Mujib Siddique.
On February 6, Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly protested to the Indian Government over what it described as "false and fabricated" remarks made across various platforms, including social media, by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The ministry accused these statements of attempting to incite instability. The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern, disappointment, and strong objections through a Thursday protest note given to India's Acting High Commissioner in Dhaka. It stated that such remarks are causing distress among the people of Bangladesh. Bangladesh has urged the Indian government to take immediate action to prevent Sheikh Hasina from making what it calls "false, fabricated, and inflammatory statements" through social media and other platforms while she remains in India.
On August 5, a student-led uprising forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina out of power following weeks of protests and violent clashes that resulted in over 600 deaths. The 77-year-old leader fled to India, while an interim government, headed by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, was established in her place.
