Denmark is willing to host peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in July, but such a meeting would need engagement from India, China, and Brazil, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said on Monday.
“If Ukraine finds that the time has come to have such a meeting, that would be fantastic,” Rasmussen said upon arriving at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Reuters reported.
“Then Denmark would obviously like to host the meeting” which would need engagement from “countries like India, Brazil and China,” the foreign minister said, adding that it was “hard for [him] to see” Russia taking part.
"For starters, we need to put some effort into creating a global commitment to organize such a meeting," Lokke Rasmussen said, adding that a summit should not just be attended by Ukraine's allies.
At the G7 summit in Japan on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy requested assistance from all nations for Kyiv's proposal to stop Russia's war in Ukraine and suggested holding a global summit in July.
Despite having expressed an interest in peace discussions, Moscow and Kyiv have different ideas about where to begin the negotiations.
Restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity and "building security architecture in the Euro-Atlantic space, including guarantees for Ukraine" are the prerequisites for peace negotiations, according to Ukraine.
In order for peace talks to start, Russia has stated that Ukraine must be "neutral," refrain from enlisting in NATO and the EU, and demand that the world community recognize the annexations of its territory.
Zelenskiy put forth a 10-point peace plan last year, which demanded that Russia respect Ukraine's territorial integrity and evacuate all of its troops from the country.
Zelenskiy’s administration stated in a statement on Sunday that the specifics of its execution should be discussed at the anticipated peace meeting.
