Delhi Police has de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest venue and named three alternative locations for holding demonstrations, according to a circular issued on Monday.
The circular stated that the Ministry of Home Affairs had constituted a committee to examine suitable alternative venues for citizens to exercise their right to organise protests and demonstrations.
Based on the committee’s recommendations, Jantar Mantar has been removed from the list of designated protest sites. Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground have been designated as the new venues for organising protests and demonstrations.
The circular also stated that detailed and revised standard operating procedures (SOPs) for organising demonstrations at the three locations would be issued separately.
Jantar Mantar has witnessed several youth-led protests since June led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), founded by Abhijeet Dipke. The protests eventually led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities.
The protest site came into focus again last month after an explosive news investigation raised questions about Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities.
The investigation fuelled Opposition parties’ allegations of “vote chori” (vote theft). The allegations have remained a major political issue, with Opposition leaders questioning the integrity of the electoral process.
The latest decision follows the committee’s review of alternative locations for public demonstrations. The revised SOPs are expected to provide detailed guidelines for organising protests at Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground.
With Jantar Mantar no longer a designated protest venue, organisers will have to look to the three newly designated locations for demonstrations under the revised arrangements. Further details on the procedures governing protests at these sites will be issued separately by the authorities.
