The Delhi High Court on Wednesday severely criticised the Delhi Shahi Idgah Managing Committee while dismissing their petition to prevent the installation of a statue of Rani Lakshmibai in Shahi Idgah Park. The court noted in its observations that communal grounds shouldn't be used to divide history. The court went on to say that Rani Lakshmibai, also known as the “Maharani of Jhansi,” is a national hero who transcends all religious boundaries.
“This is scandalous. Communal politics being played through court,” the court stated while rejecting the plea.
The Delhi High Court's single-judge bench had previously denied the Delhi Shahi Idgah Managing Committee's plea; as a result, the matter was brought before a different court bench. The Idgah Committee was accused by the court of dividing the community and using the court for its own political goals.
The scandalous pleadings were described as "unfair to the judge" by the court, which also objected to the language used in the appeal against the lone judge who had ruled against the committee. The court ordered the committee's attorneys to remove the outrageous pleadings from the petition's paragraphs and to make an apology to the court by today after the committee's counsels announced that they were withdrawing the petition.
After reviewing the case, the court is expected to issue a withdrawal order on September 27, the following date. The committee claimed that the Idgah Park is waqf property and asked the DDA and others to refrain from encroaching on Shahi Idgah at Motia Khan in Delhi's Sadar Bazar area. They asked that no statues or other structures be erected inside Idgah Park by the municipal authorities. The court's single bench rejected the argument against the Rani Lakshmibai statue's installation, saying it could not see how their freedom to practice their religion or to offer prayers was in any way being jeopardised.
