Delhi BJP Members of Parliament (MPs) have filed a writ petition in the High Court against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's decision to not implement the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in the capital. State president Virendra Sachdeva made this announcement on Wednesday during a press conference.
Sachdeva criticised the AAP and its leader, Arvind Kejriwal, for depriving countless eligible residents of Delhi from accessing the Centre's health insurance scheme. He highlighted the need for the scheme, stating that it could benefit many vulnerable individuals in the region.
Earlier in the day, Kejriwal responded to the allegations by claiming that the Ayushman Bharat scheme is "riddled with scams," citing a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). He argued that the scheme is unnecessary in Delhi, where his government provides health services free of charge. "This is not my opinion; this is what the CAG says. There are many scams in the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. Treatment under this scheme will only happen when the patient is hospitalised, but there are no conditions regarding hospitalisation in Delhi," Kejriwal stated.
He further defended his government's healthcare policies, asserting, "Everything, from medicines costing Rs 5 to operations costing Rs 1 crore, is free. If medicines, tests, and treatment are all free in Delhi, then there is no need for the Ayushman Bharat Scheme here. Modi ji should study the Delhi scheme and implement it across the country."
The exchange between the BJP and AAP intensified after Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the governments of Delhi and West Bengal for not implementing the Ayushman Bharat scheme during a speech on Tuesday.
Sachdeva responded to Kejriwal’s claims by recalling that the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme had been announced previously by then-deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in the Delhi Assembly. He condemned the AAP for going back on its promise.
In conclusion, Sachdeva asserted, "The BJP will now fight a legal battle to ensure that the benefits of the scheme are available to the elderly and other eligible persons in Delhi."
