The defense ministry finalized a deal exceeding Rs 5,300 crore with state-run Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) for the procurement of electronic fuzes destined for the Indian Army over a 10-year period.

An essential component for medium to heavy caliber artillery guns, electronic fuzes play a pivotal role in delivering sustained artillery firepower during military operations. The procurement, aimed at enhancing the Indian Army's capabilities, focuses on artillery guns capable of engaging lethally in diverse terrains, including high-altitude areas along the northern borders. This strategic move underscores the government's commitment to equipping the armed forces with cutting-edge technology for varied operational scenarios.

The primary objective of this project is to establish and bolster ammunition stocks domestically, strategically aimed at minimizing the reliance on imports. In alignment with the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision, the Ministry of Defence has formally signed a contract for ammunition procurement under the initiative titled 'Manufacture of Ammunition for Indian Army by Indian Industry.' This government initiative, addressing a long-term requirement over the next 10 years, is a crucial step towards fostering self-reliance in defense capabilities.

The ministry emphasized that the primary objective of the project is to attain self-sufficiency in ammunition manufacturing. This strategic move also aims to acquire critical technologies essential for indigenous production while mitigating risks associated with supply chain disruptions. The contract represents a significant stride towards achieving greater autonomy in defense manufacturing, aligning with the broader vision of building a self-reliant and resilient defense ecosystem for the nation.

Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) is set to manufacture the electronic fuzes at its Pune facility and the upcoming Nagpur Plant, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The project is expected to generate employment for approximately one-and-a-half lakh man-days, fostering a conducive environment for active participation from Indian industries, including MSMEs, in ammunition manufacturing.

This initiative is poised to significantly expand the ammunition manufacturing ecosystem within the country, aligning with the broader objective of enhancing self-sufficiency in defense production and promoting economic growth through indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
