According to the Ipsos IndiaBus Most Trusted Institutions annual survey of 2024, the Defence Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force), the Prime Minister of the country, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Supreme Court of India, and the Election Commission of India (ECI) have emerged as the most trusted institutions. The survey was conducted across India, encompassing various socio-economic classes (SECs), age groups, and cities, including metros, tier-1, tier-2, and tier-3 cities. Respondents were presented with a randomised list of institutions and asked to rank them based on their perceived trustworthiness.
In discussing the survey results, Parijat Chakraborty, Group Service Line Leader for Public Affairs, Corporate Reputation, CSR, and Sustainability at Ipsos India, highlighted that the Ipsos IndiaBus Most Trusted Institutions annual survey of 2024 revealed the Defence Forces, the Prime Minister of the country, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Supreme Court of India, and the Election Commission of India (ECI) as the most trusted institutions. These institutions were recognised for upholding strong integrity, values, and trustworthiness according to the perceptions of citizens surveyed. Their consistent adherence to these qualities contributed significantly to their top rankings in the survey.
Chakraborty noted that despite political parties and politicians becoming more accountable and serving the public, they continue to be viewed with skepticism and are perceived as the least trustworthy. The survey indicates that changing or clarifying these perceptions requires sustained awareness about institutions over time, coupled with consistent demonstration of exemplary work and values.
Interestingly, trust in the Defence Forces was notably high in specific demographics and regions: 76% in tier-1 cities, 72% in the north zone, and 64% in the west zone. Among the 45+ age group, trust was at 63%, and among both part-time and full-time employed individuals it stood at 62%. In SEC A, trust was reported at 60%.
Similarly, trust in the Prime Minister of the country was highest among tier-1 city residents (70%), followed by 67% in the north zone and 62% in the west zone. Among the 45+ age group, trust was reported at 56%, while among part-time and full-time employed individuals it was 54%. Trust was also notable among those with lower levels of education, standing at 54%.
