On 29th April, Praveen Shankar Kapoor, the media head of Delhi BJP, took legal action by filing a defamation case against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, along with his minister Atishi Marlena. Kapoor initiated a criminal defamation complaint, alleging that Kejriwal and Marlena had made unfounded accusations suggesting that the BJP was attempting to lure AAP MLAs by offering bribes to join their party.
Kapoor has asserted that the allegations made against him and the BJP are unfounded and without merit. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tanya Bamniyal has scheduled the matter for May 4 to gather pre-summoning evidence. This indicates that the court will examine the evidence presented before deciding whether to issue summonses to the accused parties.
Earlier this month, the BJP took action against Delhi minister Atishi by sending her a defamation notice. This move came after Atishi claimed that she had been approached to join the BJP or face arrest by the Enforcement Directorate within a month. The defamation notice suggests that the BJP is contesting the accuracy or validity of Atishi's statements and is seeking legal recourse to address the matter.
Before filing the defamation case, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor sent a legal notice to Atishi, demanding a public apology from her. This action followed Atishi's allegations that the ruling party had threatened her with arrest and had approached her to switch allegiance. By sending the legal notice and subsequently pursuing a defamation case, Kapoor aims to address what he perceives as false and damaging statements made by Atishi.
