King Frederik of Denmark significantly changed the royal coat of arms by making emblems for Greenland and the Faroe Islands stand out. Many people believe that this move is a reaction to recent remarks made by Donald Trump, the president-elect of the United States, who has reaffirmed his desire to buy Greenland.
Just over twelve months after his mother, Queen Margrethe, resigned on New Year's Eve 2023, King Frederik has made it apparent that he intends to maintain the former colony and independent Danish territory under the Danish kingdom.
The Kalmar Union, headed by Denmark from 1397 to 1523, was represented by three crowns, which have been a part of Danish royal coats of arms for 500 years. They also serve as a significant emblem for Sweden, its neighbour.
However, the crowns have been removed and changed to represent Greenland and the Faroe Islands with an enormous polar bear and ram compared to the original design. Action is being taken when tensions arise over Greenland's relationship with Denmark, which still controls its foreign and security policies.
Following Trump's repeated bid to purchase Greenland, which he initially proposed in 2019, tensions have increased. In addition to stressing Greenland's desire for independence from Denmark, Prime Minister Múte Egede has clarified that the island is not for sale.
Donald Trump Jr.'s planned trip to Greenland, allegedly to produce content for his podcast, may further strain relations. Greenlandic MPs have criticised his travel, highlighting the island's sovereignty and raising worries about the visit's potential ramifications in light of the current debate over Greenland's future.
Used on official papers and seals, with features dating back to the 12th century, the royal household said that the coat of arms "strengthens the prominence of the commonwealth." It said the three crowns had been taken down "because it is no longer relevant."
It said that the modifications were implemented in response to a committee's suggestion, which was made immediately upon his accession on January 14, 2024.
"We are all united, and each of us is committed to the kingdom of Denmark," the monarch stated last week in his first speech of the new year, from Greenland to the Danish minority in South Schleswig, which is even located outside the monarchy.
The modification of the royal coat of arms by King Frederik is interpreted as a symbolic declaration of Denmark's determination to keep the Faroe Islands and Greenland part of the country. The Arctic region's broader geopolitical significance and Denmark's determination to maintain its territorial integrity in the face of outside interest are both reflected in this gesture.
