The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India's top research organisation, accomplished its goal of developing an indigenous technique for manufacturing paracetamol, a widely used pain reliever and fever reducer. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, MoS PMO, DoPT Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, announced at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research's 40th Foundation Day at Dr Ambedkar International Centre that CSIR has developed indigenous technology for manufacturing paracetamol. This achievement is a big step forward in India's quest for pharmaceutical self-reliance. CSIR is affiliated with the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
Satya Deeptha Pharmaceuticals, situated in Karnataka, plans to use this discovery to make inexpensive paracetamol locally. Currently, India imports critical raw materials for paracetamol from several nations. The CSIR project addressed this dependency which is consistent with India’s concept of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-sufficient India).
Dr. Singh underlined at the end of his address that it is past time for us to seek beyond government resources for innovation, and that we should begin investigating non-government money, as well as knowledge partnerships and resource sharing. He stated that the Anusandhan NRF is a step in the same way, with non-government sectors raising 60% of the funding. He underlined to the scientific community that 2025 will be a powerhouse year for research and technology, with several enterprises planned.
The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) Foundation Day highlighted 16 more technology transfers: 9 from CSIR-CSIO Chennai and six from CSIR-CEERI, Pilani, as part of the 100 Days 100 Technology drive between CSIR and MSME units enrolled with Laghu Udyog Bharati.
