On June 27th, several members of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) forcefully entered the head office of the National Testing Agency (NTA) in Delhi, locking it from the inside. They were protesting against the alleged irregularities in the NEET medical entrance examinations. The protesters, carrying chains and locks, stormed the NTA office located in Okhla, Delhi.
Visuals from outside the NTA office showed a large crowd of NSUI workers raising slogans such as "NTA band karo (shut NTA)" and "NTA murdabad (down with NTA)." Shortly after the incident was reported, police and security forces arrived at the scene to disperse the crowd gathered at the testing agency office.
Meanwhile, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) held a demonstration near Jantar Mantar, protesting the alleged rigging of the NEET UG exam. Several IYC workers gathered at Jantar Mantar for the protest, raising slogans and carrying placards.
These protests emerged amid ongoing controversy over alleged irregularities and paper leak charges against the NTA, which conducted the NEET-UG examination on May 5 across 4,750 centers, with around 24 lakh candidates appearing for it.
The results, initially scheduled for June 14, were announced on June 4 due to the early completion of answer sheet evaluations. Interestingly, 67 students achieved a perfect score of 720, an unprecedented event in the history of the NTA. Notably, six of these top scorers were from a single center in Faridabad, Haryana, leading to suspicions of irregularities. There are allegations that grace marks may have played a role in so many students achieving the top rank.
Earlier in the day, the CBI made its first arrests in the NEET-UG paper leak case, taking two individuals from Patna into custody. According to probe agency officials, the arrested individuals, identified as Manish Kumar and Ashutosh Kumar, allegedly provided safe premises to the aspirants before the examination, where they were given leaked papers and answer keys. So far, the CBI has registered six FIRs in the case. The demand for a CBI probe was raised by a section of protesting students.
The NEET-UG is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.
