Democratic Representative Al Green was expelled from the House chamber on Tuesday night after interrupting President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress. Green, who has long supported Trump’s impeachment, stood up and waved his cane at the president early in the speech.
His actions received a mixed response from lawmakers—some cheered while others booed, causing chaos on the House floor. The disturbance led Speaker Mike Johnson to remind everyone of the House rules. “Members are directed to uphold and maintain decorum in the House and to cease any further disruptions,” Johnson said in a direct address to Green. House Speaker Johnson ordered the House sergeant at arms to remove Green from the chamber when he refused to sit down and let President Trump continue. Videos of the incident show that Green loudly objected when Trump said, "America is back," during his remarks. Following Green’s removal, Trump resumed his address without further interruptions, vowing to strengthen the country both at home and abroad.
Al Green, a seasoned civil rights activist, has served nine terms in the US House of Representatives. He now serves on the Homeland Security Committee and the Financial Services Committee. Al Green is an active member of the Financial Services Committee, where he works on three subcommittees: Diversity and Inclusion, Housing, Community Development, and Insurance, and Oversight and Investigations—which he leads as Chair. He is also part of the Homeland Security Committee, contributing to two subcommittees: Emergency Preparedness, Response, & Recovery and Border Security, Facilitation, & Operations. Born on September 1, 1947, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Green pursued his education at Florida A&M University, Howard University, and the Tuskegee Institute.
He was elected to serve in the US House of Representatives for the Ninth District of Houston in the same year. His father was a mechanic's assistant, while his mother was a maid. As Trump started his speech before Congress, Republican lawmakers cheered with chants of “USA! USA!” He talked about what his administration had accomplished in the first 43 days, focusing on efforts to shrink the federal government. This strategy was led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. Trump also talked about worries regarding economic instability caused by a trade war and strained relations with longtime US allies. “The American Dream is surging - bigger and better than ever before. The American Dream is unstoppable, and our country is on the verge of a comeback the likes of which the world has never witnessed, and perhaps will never witness again,” the US President said. Trump shared his economic plans, even though there are concerns about the trade war he started with Canada, China, and Mexico. These tensions have shaken global markets and raised worries about higher prices in the country.
Meanwhile, Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States, received a standing ovation when she entered the US Capitol. As she entered the House chamber, lawmakers and attendees stood up and applauded her. She was accompanied by her stepchildren, including Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner; Donald Trump Jr., his girlfriend Bettina Anderson; Eric Trump, his wife Lara; and Tiffany Trump, her husband Michael Boulos. A few moments later, Trump entered the chamber, shaking hands and greeting supporters as he made his way to the podium. He started his speech by introducing Vice President JD Vance and then took a moment to acknowledge his wife, Melania. As he mentioned her, the room filled with applause. Melania stood up, nodded in appreciation, and smiled as the applause continued.
