In a notable shift from its approach to recent bypolls, the Congress party in Kerala has issued a stern warning to rebel members involved in the Chevayur Service Co-Operative Bank election in Kozhikode. KPCC president K Sudhakaran, during his inaugural address at a party convention on Saturday, threatened consequences for those contesting against official party candidates in the bank election, signalling the importance of this race to Congress leadership.
"If the Congress fails, they will not be allowed to live in the area. So remember whether you want your life. Instead of giving jobs to party workers, they gave jobs to LDF and BJP workers," Sudhakaran warned. He expressed concern that some Congress members are making cooperative banks a means of livelihood, undermining the party's interests.
Sudhakaran emphasised the need to protect the Congress-controlled Chevayur co-operative bank, stating, "We will not allow the Chevayur co-operative bank to become another Karuvannur bank which was caught in a scam of crores of rupees." He accused a faction of trying to undermine the bank's administration with the assistance of CPI(M) and affirmed, "Their plans will fail. The Congress will come to power again, and those who have betrayed us will face consequences."
The cooperative bank election has become a matter of concern for the party following the suspension of former bank president G C Prasanth. In protest against this action, about 50 party leaders in Kozhikode resigned from the Congress. They alleged that the District Congress Committee (DCC) president was acting against the interest of local party workers and appointing party office bearers for vested interests.
On the other hand, the Kozhikode DCC has extended support to the KPCC president, emphasising that the party must retain the bank's administration at any cost.
