Former congress leader Jaiveer Shergill joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday. Jaiveer Shergill has been appointed the national spokesperson of the BJP.
Other than Shergill, the BJP appointed former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and former MP Sunil Jakhar as well as its former Uttar Pradesh president Swatantra Dev Singh as members of its national executive. Also, Madan Kaushik, Vishnu Deo Sai, its former presidents of Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh respectively, Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Manoranjan Kalia and Amanjot Kaur Ramoowalia, all three from Punjab, have been made special invitees to the national executive, the party said in a statement.
The development comes nearly three months after he walked out of Congress with scathing remarks against the Gandhis. Shergill on August 24 left the Congress party and said the decision-making is no longer done for the public benefit and that Congress makes decisions for self-serving individuals who are indulged in sycophancy. He also said he had been trying to meet Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for the past year.
Amarinder Singh quit the Congress after he was unceremoniously removed as Punjab chief minister last year. The former chief minister, who joined politics in 1969, floated his own political outfit Punjab Lok Congress after quitting the Congress. He merged his outfit with the BJP after he joined the party.
Prior to his resignation, Shergill served as the National Media Panelist for the Indian National Congress Party, Spokesperson of the Punjab Pradesh Congress and Co-Chairman of the Legal Cell, Congress (Punjab).
