On Sunday, the Congress party alleged that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ruling party, Trinamool Congress, controls around 35 to 40 lakh "fake voters" in the state. This accusation mirrors similar claims made by the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party.
"At least 35 to 40 lakh fake voters are in the control of the Trinamool Congress; we all know how easy it is to get enlisted in the voter list," Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, former Congress MP, informed reporters on Sunday.
The remarks allowed the BJP to push for implementing the crucial National Register of Citizens in the state. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari called on all political parties to support the initiative.
Suvendu Adhikari stated, "All political parties should support NRC. Once BJP comes to power in the 2026 Assembly polls, we will implement NRC in Bengal." He accused the Trinamool Congress government of failing to curb infiltration by opposing the NRC, while BJP-ruled states favour its implementation.
“See how terrorist outfits, like Ansarullah Bangla, of Bangladesh are spreading their tentacles in one district after another in West Bengal. See how the demography is changing, particularly in the border districts of the state,” he told journalists in Kolkata.
Stating that having NRC can help state in detecting infiltrators and identifying ‘jihadi elements’, he questioned, “What are the police and state administration doing? They are looking the other way.”
“All political parties should support the demand for having an NRC in West Bengal. Once BJP comes to power in the 2026 assembly polls, we will make it happen in the state,” he said.
He further claimed, "States like Uttarakhand and Gujarat are implementing it, Maharashtra has started. NRC is going on in NDA ruled states," adding that enforcing the NRC is the only way to eliminate "infiltrators."
"Bengal is a bordering state. Next to us are Bangladesh-Nepal-Bhutan. We need to identify who is an Indian citizen and who is not by NRC. There are illegal voters in this state; there are Rohingyas. The Election Commission has no role here," the BJP leader stated.
This statement prompted a firm reaction from the Trinamool Congress. This remark warned the BJP not to function against society. "Our party’s work under the leadership of our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is to provide 'Roti, kapra aur makan' that we do. And BJP as they cannot compete with us, and they are enemies of Bengal, so they are trying to create division amongst religions. People have rejected this," TMC Senior leader Kunal Ghosh spoke.
Recently, Mamata raised concerns about the BJP allegedly "manipulating voter lists" to gain an electoral advantage in the state, a claim similar to what AAP had made during the Delhi elections. West Bengal is set to hold assembly elections in 2026.
